Hiring is coordinated by the City of San Luis Obispo Human Resources Department and Fire Department. The San Luis Obispo City Firefighters' Association encourages candidates to ensure that they meet the minimum qualifications, please see the brochure below for more information. The San Luis Obispo City Fire Department is an all risk fire department providing paramedic level EMS service, hazmat response, urban search and rescue, wildland, and more. Four stations staff two three person ALS engine companies, a three person ALS quint, and a four person ALS tractor drawn tiller truck. Personnel are led by a shift battalion chief who responds from station one.

In 2017, the fire department responded to 6,669 incidents.
